SALON CIEL PRESENTS ALTOONA BEER CAN MUSEUM EXHIBITION AT GALLERYBAR

Opening Reception To Take Place On November 4th, 2009 at GalleryBar

New York, NY –The Altoona Beer Can Museum, a visual art exhibition about memory and nostalgia, opens at the Lower East Side hotspot GalleryBar (120 Orchard Street between Rivington and Delancey) on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 from 7 – 11pm. Through Altoona, Salon Ciel Curator Lyndsey Beutin asks the viewer to consider how we remember, represent, and judge a place – an unidentified place we may know personally – and balances those heavy ponderings with hints of pop and whimsy.

The Altoona Beer Can Museum exhibition creates a fictional museum that could be found in any town. Works are presented as part of the museum, conceptually mirroring the feelings and descriptions we might associate with such a place – nostalgia, monotony, pride, longing, eccentricity, nausea, valor, deep-seeded secrets of lives lived openly.

The exhibition features artists Thomas Birtwistle, Sasha Braginsky, Joseph Farbrook, Allison Green, Erin Laubenheimer, Sarah Michelle Rupert, and Joy Whalen whose work will transform GalleryBar into the Altoona Beer Can Museum through site-specific sculpture installations, vivid photography, eerie film and painting, and frenetic and consuming animation. Each artist addresses topics as disparate as taxidermy and feminism in their individual works, but when viewed collectively as an exhibition, these pieces demonstrate the complexity of memory. Prices range from $50 – $3500.

Altoona Beer Can Museum will be on view from November 4 – November 30, 2009, at GalleryBar, 120 Orchard St. (between Delancey St. and Rivington St.) New York, NY 10002.
