In the Air // On the Screen follows Rupert’s work from the serial stagings that explode and levitate and the commonplace, to an ongoing intimate relationship with television and a digital journey that takes a paper animation above and beyond physical limitations to find happiness. As her body of work shifts between analog and digital manipulation; meaning and inference are left open and, in the air.

Sarah Michelle Rupert is a visual artist living and working in South Florida. Using photography, video, collage, drawing and design, her work revolves around consumer-driven mass-communication and television culture in contemporary experience.

Rupert’s work depicts the confused state of contemporary feminism, ensuing from the bombardment of mixed messages transmitted by popular mass media. Subverting normal expectations of the passive female subject in photography, her environments romanticize and celebrate unnatural and uncanny events. They are each visual analogs for a verbal oxymoron plaguing the female experience. Though the pleasing and fantastical images initially appeal to the viewer, they also provoke questions and cultivate a sense of mistrust and cynicism.
